DEFINITION

19th Century itinerant Russian Painters, they formed touring shows to take their work to the people. In 1870 in St. Petersburg, they created a cooperative of realist-style artists to protest the tight reign on their art of the St. Petersburg Academy. This organization evolved into the Society for Traveling Art Exhibitions. Themes were about social mores and the beauty of common people. Participants included Ilya Pepin, V.M Vasnetsov, Ivan Kramskoi, Nikolai Ge and Vasily Petrov. By the 1890s, the Academy of Art was including this type of work in their exhibitions.
