Thangka - tangka - thanka - tanka painting

DEFINITION

A painted, embroidered or blockprinted Buddhist banner, hung at family altars or monasteries and sometimes carried in religious processions by Buddhist monks. The word "thang" means flat in the Tibetan language; hence the reference is to paintings done on flat surfaces.
