Staff

A sculptural and architectural medium composed of plaster, cement, and jute fibers. This material was first used in buildings constructed for the Paris exhibition of 1878. It was also employed for many buildings and sculptures at the 1893 World Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Very few of these works still exist. Staff has proven to be suitable only for temporary works. Numerous sculptures for the Chicago exposition were executed in staff by Daniel Chester French (American, 1850-1931) and Edward Clark Potter (American, 1857-1923).
