Skowhegan school of painting and sculpture

DEFINITION

In Skowhegan, Maine, it is a nine-week summer artists retreat residency program, founded in 1947 by artists. Focus is on leading-edge art including painting, sculpture, conceptual and digital. Enrollees for each session number 65, having been judged by a jury of artists and school governors. They are given studios and living quarters and staff support of 20 persons including resident artists. The fee is about $5000., and more than half receive scholarships.
