Punch

DEFINITION

A tool hammered at right angles into a hard surface such as wood or metal, or pressed by hand into a soft surface such as clay or wax. A punch can cut a ring, or dot, or it can be decorated with a leaf or other such design. Sets of lettered and numbered punches, available in various sizes and styles, can be very useful. Some punches can be described as chasing tools. A punch can also be a broad, pointed metal tool used in roughing out a stone carving.Also see beader and puppet.
