A fine-art term descriptive of an original work with aesthetic qualities that has skilled application of paint to a surface or ground. Painting mediums include oil, tempera, pastel, fresco, watercolor, gouache, encaustic and polymer or acrylic. The descriptive term Painting, as opposed to commercial or applied art, is usually intended to refer to that which was created to be one-of-a-kind rather and not to be reproduced.
