Nazarene

DEFINITION

A group of early 19th century German Romantic painters, they shared a commitment to reviving honesty and spirituality in Christian art. The name Nazarene was derisive, given to them because of their affectation of Biblical mannerisms and dress. Members included Carl Begas, Wilhelm von Schadow, Eugene von Guerard and Philipp Veit.
