DEFINITION

Founded in 1808 by Maximilian I of Bavaria in Munich, it is the Royal Academy of Germany, and one of the oldest and significant academies of that country. Many American artists studied there including William Merritt Chase, Frank Duveneck, Augustus Dunbier, Josef Albers, and Joseph Henry Sharp. In 1953, the name changed to Academy of Fine Arts, Munich.
