Massachusetts school of art

DEFINITION

The nation's first independent public college of art and design, it opened in 1873 as Massachusetts Normal Art School. The goal was to educate students in the creative process, which in turn would lead to mind, body and spiritual development. It continues today as Massachusetts College of Art and Design.
