Informalists

DEFINITION

A group of California plein-air painters dedicated to depicting lesser-known, unusual landscape scenes. Many of their oil paintings are small and expressionistic and are completed on location to "capture the true feeling and atmosphere" of their subject matter. Informalists base their work on the tradition of the early 20th-century California Impressionists who brought national attention to the beauty of the West Coast. Informalists add to that message the necessity of preserving that beauty. Members are Jeff Daniel Smith, Cyndra Bradford, Johnny Apodaca, Gerard Martin, Jr., Barry John Raybould and Richmond Woodson.
