Hospitalfield allan-fraser institute

DEFINITION

Scotland's first school of fine art, it is located on the estate of the Frasers of Hospitalfied, owned by the family of the wife of artist Patrick Allan (1813-1890). Moving to the estate, which dated to the medieval era, he added his wife's family name, and directed a massive building and maintenance program. The place became a center for education for artists, musicians and writers. On Allan-Fraser's death, a trust was created to insure the continuance of the place as a residential center for arts professionals.
