Graham art medal

DEFINITION

An award of the Brooklyn Institute, it was named for Augustus Graham (1776-1851), a manufacturer, philanthropist, and founder of the Apprentices' Library, a facility of lectures and entertainment for working men. Under his leadership, it grew into the Brooklyn Institute, later named the Brooklyn Museum of Art. The Graham Art Medal is given each year for outstanding contribution to the Museum.
