Cumming school of art
DEFINITION
Founded in 1895 by Charles Atherton Cumming, who had been a teacher at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, it had the original name of Des Moines Academy of Art. Because it was so successful due to Cumming's leadership, it was renamed for him in 1900. He was a teacher there as was Marie Giles, and students included Merlin Enabnit, Lee Allen, and Louise Orwig.
